Whole Foods Eat Up this Friday at 7!

This Friday at 7pm let's meet and eat on the upper level patio at Whole Foods Market on Lamar and 6th.  We have the worldwide flagship store in our backyard, with a good selection of packaged and prepared vegan foods--so let's go there together!

Weather permitting, we'll meet to the far right of the UPPER LEVEL patio atop the stairs.  If people wanna meet up early near the front doors to go on a food finding expedition that would be cool too.  Maybe we could chant "More vegan cakes!  Free vegan cheese on pizza!" as we march through the aisles...

Thanks to everyone who came to our picnic potluck the other week--it was a blast, and really well attended.  We're definitely gonna have more events there and other picnic spots!

As you can see to the right, we've got a restaurant meet-up at Mother's Cafe this Tuesday evening.  Come join us in the new 'garden room' and eat some good food like the Bueno Burger and blueberry pie.  Then, Friday the 21st, we're doing a Whole Foods excursion and eating on their upper patio plaza.

Hope to see lots of you there!

Hey All,

Last night we had a great turnout at the Casa de Luz restaurant visit.  There was somewhere near 20 of us casa de luzers in the house!  (One note--Please be sure to RSVP for events to make sure we anticipate the seating needs and don't have to send anyone to the kids table!  awesome

Afterwards many of us went and took over Dhaba Joy in our usual fashion, where we practiced some vegan armwrestling.  Vegan event promoter and VRA friend Mike Litt has put together this exciting event for Friday night!  Note the specials on vegan pizza!  Some of us will definitely be there rep'ing vegan muscle power.  awesome

Friday February 15th at 7pm, Restaurant Visit venue TBD
Saturday February 23rd at 6pm, Potluck theme/location TBD

Thanks to droves of you that turned out for the three January events!  Green was a fried food fantasia, and the Mediterranean Potluck was even better than expected!

Hey Y'all,

As you can see to your right, there are two very fun meet ups in the next two weeks:

First, our second restaurant visit of the month, tomorrow night at Aster's Ethiopian.  I went by there yesterday to give them a heads up about impending vegan insurgency!  They have plenty of seating, but probably the only place we can all fit together is in the back room, which is open-air but covered.  Please edit your RSVP (or make one) if anything has changed, cuz I'll be calling them tomorrow afternoon with the headcount.

Second, we have the VRA Holiday Potluck blowout, at Chez de Craig on the 30th.  That's gonna be a blast and I'm sure there will be some Rock Band action after we gorge ourselves on holiday goodies!  Again, please RSVP if you haven't, and let us know what you'll be bringing once you've decided.

Looking ahead to the new year, we will need suggestions for the two January Eat Outs.  We'll start a thread soon, and you can plug your eatery of choice there.  Hope to see lots of you tomorrow and on the 30th!

Thanks to everyone who came out to Thai Tara Eat Out last night!  The 15 or 16 people who showed up had a great time in the private room that was set aside for us.  No, not like that!  The parking is a little tough there, but otherwise it was perfect.  Thanks to our gracious host and friend "Thai Paul" for taking care of us!  Welcome to newcomers Rachel, Sammie, and Caleb--Hope you join us again soon!

We are planning to have to have a potluck at the home of one or other VRA regular on December 30th, so look for more details soon.  In the meantime, enjoy the delightful picture above of our resident Rock Band stars Travis and Jacob last weekend rocking out vegan style!!

Happy vegan holiday season folks!

Some new and cool things are lined up for VRA.  Firstly, the creators of this lovely site will soon be adding new event listing functionality that will make the Upcoming Meetups tool more informative and understandable by categorizing events.  Secondly, we are adopting a more regular event schedule involving two restaurant meet ups and one potluck per month.

The restaurant visits will be 2nd Tuesdays, Fridays of the following week, and potlucks on the last weekend each month.  Check the Upcoming Meetups sidebar often--and look under "calendar" in the top navigation bar to see events for future months.

Events are open to anyone interested in veganism.  Come join us--we're a fun and wacky group of people who are interested in veganism for various reasons!

This event will be held on Sunday March 18th at Chris B's home located at : 1004 Fauntleroy Trl austin tx 78758 (that's NORTH). Bringing your own chair might be a good plan - and if anyone has a folding table or two- that would also be a big help.
As always, please bring a vegan dish of food enough to feed eight, a plate, cup, and utensils for yourself  (and if anyone has a dusty old Nintendo system they want to bring, It would rock to make some jumps with the master plumber)

Hey crew, just an update to keep you all informed. We're moving our mailing list to our new server, this doesn't mean much for you besides messages may look a bit different and new users sign up in a different fashion.

In other news, we're about to put up the new organization for the restaurants page, so that you'll be able to sort according to vegan, veg, veg-friendly restaurants and we're also going to start including hours of operation, etc. in the restaurant listings.

This month we'll add a restaurant visit to the schedule and do another potluck. We're still scheming for what theme to have, but it'll be good happy And you should be kicking yourself if you missed the trip to Spiral Diner! It was awesome.

Vegan Fondue Poolside Potluck!
Posted by: becfree on 2006/07/15 6:46pm. | add comment
We are hosting a Vegan Fondue Poolside Potluck. I will post pictures of the pool and backyard soon on the pics page.

Okay, I have decided that we will have a great "build your own" salad bar with all the goodies. We will provide this, so don't bring any salad goodies except your favorite dressing.

Then, we will have cold and hot fondues. Sweet and savory alike. I will have about 4 variations and others will bring some as well. Bring dippers too if you want. So far, we have a rich chocolate fondue, a garbanzo dill recipe, a fruit puree fondue, an alfredo dip, and a creamy vegan cool sweet dip.

I will make homemade vegan ice cream as well (I am going to do vanilla and we can top with raspberry puree or Vegan chocolate syrup,  or you can bring your favorite topping, etc... I found this great vegan hot chocolate mix with cayenne pepper in it and I am in love with it. I put it on everything.)

We will provide juices, sodas, water, and Tea, but feel free to bring your own beer or wine. We will have a tub of ice to chill it in.

Make sure to bring your swimsuits and towels. The pool is so refreshing. Bring a lawn chair. We will have repellent on hand in case. LOL.

See you all there... call me with questions. (512) 934-2265.

Peace,
bec

I was so disapointed to find out that after changing their menu to rid it of honey -- they have now decided to change about 5 of their dishes and use a mock soy nugget that contains WHEY!
How lame is that?
I asked the waitress if this was just a mix-up or if it was permanent - -and she said permanent - they had gotten permission from the vegan lady who owns the shopping center.
Why did they do it? The waitress said: "I guess it's tastier?"

One of the biggest hurdles for someone to go vegan is to give up those damn addictive dairy products. Vegans get creative - using seeds, navy beans, tofu, nuts, and of course, nutritional yeast to enjoy some old-school favorites.
Some ideas: pizza, cheezecake, lasagna, fettuchine alfredo, mac n' cheeze, milkshakes, grilled cheeze sandwiches, quesadillas with sour creem, cheeze logs or balls, spinach artichoke dip, french onion dip, nachos, chili cheeze fries!!!!!

We'll get together at 7 p.m. at Kayla and Charles' digs - located at: 1510 Madison Ave

Titaya's Thai Cuisine  submitted by gabe0922
5501 N. Lamar Blvd (corner of lamar and houston...next to 1/2 price books). I was lucky to discover this restaurant across from my apt complex thanks to a fellow vegan co-worker. The food is excellent, and all vegetarian and tofu dishes are prepared vegan. They have a very large menu with many options and have indicators by which entrees are vegan and which can be prepared vegan...altogether there are about 45 vegan dishes/options. If you love curry, the Gang Musmun is awesome. For dessert try the Sticky Rice with Mango. :o)

Are you a fan of Pad Thai? Ramen Noodles? Miso Soup? Spring Rolls? Sweet and Sour Seitan?
Well - give it up for an Asian-themed potluck!
Bring whatever Asian dish rocks your world, and see what the rest of the crew can come up with. Remember to bring: utensils, drinking glass, and a plate for you to eat with.

We will be getting together at John's place for the potluck:
John Goff lives at the Ventana apartments, located at 2209 Hancock Drive. His apt.# is 33. You will need to ring him up at the front gate so he can buzz you in (hit "#010" to ring him up). The feasting begins at 6pm on Sunday February 19th.

Hey all, we're planning a vegan southern cooking night soon that will be added to the upcoming events calendar shortly. Down home is where it's at, ideas like mashed potatoes, cornbread and earth balance, biscuits and gravy, rootbeer floats, southern fried tofu/wheat gluten, creamed corn. You know it.

So that's the main thing we've got coming up.

Apologies for the lack of updates and activity. Yael and I just got back from our trip to Mexico (which was awesome by the way). Anyway, we're scheduling a restaurant meetup at Mr. Natural on the 20th, and we'll soon vote on what our next activity should be. We'll be putting a poll up soon so everyone can vote on what they want to do next.

Hey guys and gals. It's time for another meetup! This month's will be at Mr. Natural at 2pm on Saturday, July 9th. Mr. Natural has a great lunch special featuring vegetarian Mexican food (for those who haven't been before). All of the muffins and a couple other bakery items are completely vegan. So come hang out and chill with some other vegans for a good little time. It'll be nice.

And then a vegan sushi party hosted by Simon and Callie on the 14th.  There's a thread for it here on the message board.

You may notice some significant changes/additions this weekend as Jacob and I try to get up as many of the things we've been working on. Now that both of us are working full-time that mainly just leaves the weekend to work on the site. I think a few of us at least will be out there at the petition at BookPeople on Saturday. Hit up the discussion board if you haven't yet, we've got some good topics going. Jayeh

Hey all! The next meetup will be Sunday, June 12th at 7pm on the Whole Foods balcony. We'll make a sign for anyone coming, and this is just an occasion to come hang out, meet whoever, go grab something to eat in the store, or check it out if you haven't before. More info will be available soon on the site. We're also planning on having a tofu making night where I'll also try to sample some experiments with my soymilk maker that I should be getting in about a week. I'm hoping to try various milks like rice milk and maybe even other beans. We'll let you know when this is scheduled.

Hey all, Monkeywrench Books on North Loop just east of Lamar is opening their coffee shop this weekend! The opening is from noon to 8pm on Saturday and all the drinks will be vegan! There will be some of Celeste's vegan delights for sale. So I think a few of us are going to head over there on Saturday and hit it up! Monkeywrench is a wonderful activist bookstore and much of the crew there is vegan, so we should absolutely support them. I'll make a thread about it on the board and thanks to Brea for letting us know about the opening.

Just added a thread Here with pictures from the screening. It went great and the sweets were nice and oily, but good. For the next event coming we'll be able to do all the rsvping here on the site, so that will add ease to the process. I encourage everyone to check out the discussion board as we have some good topics going at the moment.

Ah, and you can change your password now.

Update and Upcoming Event
Posted by: Ross on 2005/05/12 2:26pm. | add comment
Well Jacob and I continue to edit the site daily, usually little things. You can now comment on restaurants, and I'm still playing with how each entry looks. Thanks to you guys who've been using the message board, it's good to see a few active members. On to planning-

so it seems we've decided to do a screening of "The Witness," a documentary about a working class man in New York becoming an anti-fur activist, speaking out about the meat and fur industries in the country. He tells his story in this film about how he once feared and avoided animals until a kitten changed his perspective, inspiring him to rescue abandoned animals, become vegetarian, and spread what he knows about the industries. It's a great and inspiring film, so I highly encourage everyone to come check it out.

We just need to decide when we want to have the screening. I've volunteered to host the screening and I can make vegan cookies or some nice little treat for the folks who come.

So what do you think... next week sometime...or longer than that, maybe about 2 weeks from now? I say we just up and do it next week, as it is sort of a pre-screening. Vala has said she wants to do a screening of it in an amphitheater she has access to in the future, but she has to work some things out before we can do that.

So give me some feedback, either by email or on the site. There's currently a thread about it on the messageboard.

Take care,

Ross

P.S. Also, there is a protest on Saturday of KFC, and while we are not specifically an activist group, but a social one rather, I know some people are interested in this sort of thing. So here's a quote about it:

" On Saturday, May 14th at 12:00 noon, please join Action For Animals and
PETA to protest KFC at 1210 Barton Springs Road in Austin, TX. For more
information, please contact Salvador at afa@ccsi.com. Come out and show
people that the secret in KFC's secret recipe is the torture of millions
of chickens.
KFC is responsible for slitting conscious birds' throats open, and
scalding them while they're still alive. They cut the beaks off of
mother hens without pain killers and drug their chickens with
antibiotics to keep them alive through conditions that would otherwise
kill them. Please join our worldwide campaign against KFC by attending
this protest.

You can visit www.KentuckyFriedCruelty.com for more information. "

Well, the site is now officially revamped with a new layout. The message board is actually working, though there aren't too many posting options currently, it does get the job done. We'll be working on that in the coming days. Not all the pages are up, but the vegans, discussion, pictures, restaurants, and links pages are up. We'll be trying to get as much as we can up soon and get us closer to full functionality. Jacob's going to add a retrieve password link soon for those who have forgotten their password, and it'll be emailed to you when you click the link (mainly for you, Matt). A bunch of new options will be added including the ability to vote on venues as well as RSVP for upcoming events. So everyone get excited, and feel free to go ahead and start posting. ah and Jacob says hi. haha

Austin Energy's Green Choice Program
Posted by: Ross on 2003/12/05 8:20pm. | add comment
I know many of you would be interested in this, I hadn't heard about it until a couple weeks ago in my geology class.  Austin Energy has a program which you can participate in by giving just a little more in your monthly utility bill(a couple dollars/mth right now, by next year, only cents more/mth) than the typical charges.  By joining it shows your support for alternative energy sources, primarily wind and solar power, and lets Austin Energy know that you're interested in decreasing our reliance on fossil fuels for power.  Austin still gets 30% of its power from coal burning, one of the filthiest fuels to burn, and only 3% from alternative sources!  So sign up for it on the following site, or there's a number you can call to do it as well, it's only a bit more each month that i'm sure most of you can spare.

go to the following site for more information:

Vegan roommate sought.

Hey y'all, I'm looking for a vegan roommate to move into a house I recently bought in central east Austin (near MLK and Springdale, backs up to the municipal golf course over there).  $400 a month plus 1/3 of bills, living with one boy (25) and one lady (21).  We're definitely into buying/cooking communal groceries.  It's a decently sized room and there's a full bath that the renter would have pretty much to themselves.  We have two dogs and a kitten living at the house, animal companions are welcome (as long as everyone gets along!).  The house has new CACH and a huge fenced yard.

If y'all know of anyone that needs a place, please let me know.  You can email me at pantstx@another.com.  Thanks!

Fellow vegans:

Please contact me (trish@urbanfunk.com) if you or anyone you know might be able to provide an approx. 6 week old black and white kitten a safe, loving, and permanent home. It was found in an alleyway downtown with its eyes gouged out. Needless to say, this little kitten desperately needs help. Surgery will be performed this week, so adoption (at no cost) should be possible sometime next week.

Ok guys update. We're having a movie night on this Thursday, October 23 at 8pm here at my condo.  The movie is Igby Goes Down, an awesome film about a boys strange coming of age story.  If you'd like more info on it go to: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0280760/ .  There will be vegan dessert, probably ice cream, so try to make it out.

The condo's located by 24th and Lamar.  From Lamar turn going east on 24th toward UT and turn at your first left onto Longview.  The complex is in the middle with "2408" on the front, and there's also a weird horse thing hanging from the 2nd floor balcony happy, yeah that's us.  The code for the gate is 2424*, and the condo is #212.  My number's 512-779-7308 if you need help.

Another note is we've decided that along with the Students Against Cruelty to Animals there will be a monthly potluck on the last Sunday of every month. So next sunday there will be a potluck at Lauren's house, where the last one was, at 2pm.  Directions will be sent again later. That's it for now, hope to see you Thursday. Peace,
